Armchair "Dug Out Chair", design around 1917, execution around 1980.
Black stained ash with mother of pearl inlays, seat and armrests upholstered in light mauve leather.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh revolutionized the Art Nouveau movement with his "Spook School" designs. The "Dug Out" armchair, named after the tearoom for which it was designed, is a signature piece by Mackintosh. His signature geometric patterns and flowing lines come to life in this extremely comfortable chair.
Although no original examples of the "Dug Out" chair are known to exist, the details can be found in the architectural drawings of the Dug Out Tearoom. A 1917 watercolor painting, held in the University of Glasgow collection, shows the complete interior of the tearoom, including the "Dug Out" chair. This chair was also included in the furniture collection for the home of W. Basset Lowke, along with other pieces such as the folding table and the Mackintosh cabinet.
Private property, Baden-Württemberg.
